Applying waterslide decals to ceramics and glassware is a fun and effective way to personalise mugs, plates, glasses, jars, vases and more.
But once your designs are in place, how do you make sure they stay beautiful?
In this post, we’ll explain how to clean and care for your decals so they remain vibrant and securely attached, without cracking, peeling, or fading over time.

Are Waterslide Decals Waterproof?
Once applied correctly and sealed, waterslide decals are fairly water-resistant — but that doesn’t mean they’re indestructible.
If you’re using inkjet waterslide decal paper, it’s essential to seal your printed design before applying it.
Not doing so can lead to smudging or fading when the decal is exposed to moisture.
For best results, use a clear lacquer or acrylic spray. Our guide on How to Seal Inkjet Waterslide Decals for Long-Lasting Results explains this step in detail.
How to Clean Decaled Ceramics and Glassware
Once your decal is fully dried and sealed (wait at least 24 hours after application), follow these cleaning tips:
1. Hand Wash Only
Avoid dishwashers unless you’ve sealed your decal with a dishwasher-safe lacquer. The high heat and strong detergents in dishwashers can damage or lift your design.
2. Use Mild Soap and Warm Water
Clean gently using a soft sponge or cloth. Avoid harsh scrubbers or abrasive cleaners — they can scratch or peel your decal.
3. Avoid Soaking for Long Periods
Prolonged exposure to hot, soapy water may eventually wear down your sealant. A quick wash is all that’s needed.
4. Dry Immediately
After washing, pat your item dry with a soft towel. Don’t leave it to drip dry where water may collect at the edges of your decal.
Extra Protection: Clear Coatings & Lacquers
If your decaled item will be used frequently (like a favourite mug or a kitchen jar), it’s worth applying a final protective layer.
Use a clear acrylic sealant or dishwasher-safe Mod Podge to help your decal withstand daily use.

What to Avoid
- Scrubbing pads – even non-stick-safe sponges can scratch a decal
- Microwave use – unless you’re certain your sealant is microwave-safe, avoid reheating ceramic items with decals
- Extreme temperatures – rapid changes from hot to cold can cause cracks or lifting
How Long Do Waterslide Decals Last?
With proper sealing and care, waterslide decals can last for years — especially on items that aren’t exposed to heavy wear.
For decorative items like vases, jars or candle holders, you can expect long-term durability.
For everyday mugs or glassware, occasional touch-ups or resealing may be required over time.
